Elizabeth Warren Plan: Let Students Borrow for College for the Rate Banks do

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) notes that big banks can borrow money for a rate of 0.75%, while the lowest rates students can borrow money at 3.4%. She is proposing students should be able to borrow money at the same rates as big banks do. She brings up the point that why should we not give our students the same deal as big banks that helped to wreck our economy in 2007-08. This would keep our economy competitive in the world and help our young people.

She sums things up very well with her first piece of legislation she introduced in the Senate. Let's help students wanting to go to college and not big banks. Her Senate speech is worth the time to listen to.

Democrats select Danny Stults to run for County Council, District 4

At a caucus May 28, the Harrison County Democratic Party selected Danny Stults to run for the County Council in District 4. The seat is currently being held by Ralph Sherman, who was defeated in the primary. This district covers all of Boone, Heth, Posey, Taylor, Washington, and Webster Townships, plus the South Harrison Precinct. Congratulations to Danny, and on to November!

Beware of the People (Republicans) Behind the Curtain

At least one of the Republicans candidate for office this year wants to run as a fresh face and outsider. But beware of Republican local political power brokers behind this person's candidacy. Before you consider candidates who say they are outsiders, look behind the curtain for the real people behind them.

Update on What to Expect on our Website

We wanted to update you on some things to stayed tuned for on our website as we approach the November election. As our great Democratic President Harry S Truman once said, " I don’t give them Hell, I just tell the truth about them and they think it’s Hell."

It is very evident that while our local newspaper uses the word "Democrat" in their name, that this newspaper might as well be called "The Corydon Republican" or "The Harrison County Tea Party Weekly News". It would appear that it is about as "fair and balanced" as Fox News. While we can only speculate as to why the newspaper has turned into a Republican-Tea Party rag, Democrats in Harrison County have to use other means to get our message out. Reporters at this newspaper show their true colors by promoting and liking a large number of local Republican candidates on facebook, and even more through biased articles. We do not see Republican officials challenged on obvious inaccuracies. In fact, the opposite seems to be true- anything Republican officials say is printed as fact, and Democrats are largely ignored. Despite frequent comments on the Harrison County Council, one would not even know that Councilmen Richard Gerdon and Gordon Pendleton even exist. We have even seen things that look like little more than GOP press releases published as serious news articles in this paper. At least one or two of  their reporters seem to have very cozy relationships with Republican elected officials to the point you wonder whether they are helping to run their re-election campaigns and refuse to print anything that might reflect negatively on them. Needless to say, take the "news" you read there with a healthy dose of salt.

As a way we can fight back and get our message out, we will be rolling out several respected people in the community that will be writing articles on our website to help set the record straight. We will also be reviewing public statements by Republican officials and check them with reality. Needless to say, we have a number of articles to share with the people of Harrison County to give them a "fair and balanced" look at the issues and candidates.

Stay tuned....

Celebrate Memorial Day

Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

During that first national celebration, former Union Gen. and sitting Ohio Congressman James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there.
“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.”
- James A. Garfield
May 30, 1868 Arlington National Cemetery
This event was inspired by local observances of the day that had taken place in several towns throughout America in the three years after the Civil War. In 1873, New York was the first state to designate Memorial Day as a legal holiday. By the late 1800s, many more cities and communities observed Memorial Day, and several states had declared it a legal holiday. After World War I, it became an occasion for honoring those who died in all of America’s wars and was then more widely established as a national holiday throughout the United States.

In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and established that Memorial Day was to be celebrated on the last Monday of May.Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery each year with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Traditionally, the President or Vice President lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 5,000 people attend the ceremony annually.

From the Harrison County Democratic Chair: Thanks for a Clean Campaign So Far

On behalf of the Harrison County Democratic Party, I would like to thank the local Democratic candidates for every contested office on the ballot for thus far conducted a clean campaign and sticking to the issues. We have even seen that our local Republican candidates have ran a relatively clean campaign so far as well, but that can change before Primary Election Day, as we have seen before.

Thank you for running an clean Democratic Primary Campaign
Jim Kincaid

Harrison County Democratic Party Chairman

What you will need to vote

As you probably know, Indiana was the very state in the Republican strategy of voter suppression with our state's strict photo I.D. requirement in order to vote. Many other states have pushed forward with this discriminatory policy since then to try to keep people from exercising their right to vote as well. That being said, you will need a photo I.D. in order to vote, and the identification must meet specific conditions.

From the Indiana Secretary of State, here are the requirements:

Your photo ID must meet 4 criteria to be acceptable for voting purposes. It Must:

1. Display your photo

2. Display your name, and the name must conform to your voter registration record. Conform does not mean identical. Below are examples of names that would conform to "Robert John Crew"
  • Robert John Crew
  • Robert J. Crew
  • Robert Crew
  • R. John Crew
  • R. J. Crew
  • Bob John Crew
  • Bob J. Crew
  • Bob Crew
  • John Crew

3. Display an expiration date and either be current or have expired sometime after the date of the last General Election (November 6, 2012)
  • NOTE: An ID issued by the US Department of Defense, a branch of the uniformed services, the Merchant Marine, or the Indiana National Guard is not required to have an expiration date, or may state that the document has an "Indefinite" expiration date.

4. Be issued by the State of Indiana or the U.S. government

In most cases, an Indiana driver license, Indiana photo ID card, Military ID or U.S. Passport is sufficient.
A student ID from an Indiana State school may only be used if it meets all of the 4 criteria specified above. A student ID from a private institution may not be used for voting purposes. For more Information for College Students click here.

If you are unable or unwilling to present ID meeting these requirements, you may cast a provisional ballot. If you cast a provisional ballot, you have until noon 10 days after the election to follow up with the county election board and either provide the necessary documentation or affirm one of the law’s exemptions applies to you.

Republicans Block Minimum Wage Increase

Yesterday, Republicans in the U.S. Senate blocked even having a debate on raising the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 per hour. All members of the GOP except one member, voted against a motion to proceed to debate. Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Indiana) voted in favor of raising the minimum wage. By a margin of 69% to 28%, according to the March Bloomberg Poll, Americans support an increase in the minimum wage. In fact, some Republicans support eliminating the minimum wage altogether, including Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tennessee) and billionaire Republicans the Koch Brothers, who have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of Republicans in the last five years. Raising the minimum wage will help raise the wages of all workers, not just those currently at $7.25, by raising all wages and lift millions out of poverty.

If you want to let our Senators know what you think about raising the minimum wage, the number for the U.S. Senate switchboard is (202) 224-3121. Sen. Joe Donnelly can be contacted at (202) 224-4814 or you can e-mail him visiting his website at this link: E-mail Joe Donnelly. Sen.
