Republicans Go Crazy: Tea Party Caucus Founder Michele Bachmann

You know it is getting bad when Republicans go on Fox News, and on Neil Cavuto's show, and even they think you are nuts. Despite frequent complaints about frivilous lawsuits, Republicans in the House say they want to file a lawsuit against President Obama, and when asked what it was about, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) could name any specifics. But, back to Bachmann, the former GOP Presidential candidate who once confused John Wayne with John Wayne Gacy. Take a look at this clip.

Elizabeth Warren Plan: Let Students Borrow for College for the Rate Banks do

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) notes that big banks can borrow money for a rate of 0.75%, while the lowest rates students can borrow money at 3.4%. She is proposing students should be able to borrow money at the same rates as big banks do. She brings up the point that why should we not give our students the same deal as big banks that helped to wreck our economy in 2007-08. This would keep our economy competitive in the world and help our young people.

She sums things up very well with her first piece of legislation she introduced in the Senate. Let's help students wanting to go to college and not big banks. Her Senate speech is worth the time to listen to.

Republicans Block Minimum Wage Increase

Yesterday, Republicans in the U.S. Senate blocked even having a debate on raising the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 per hour. All members of the GOP except one member, voted against a motion to proceed to debate. Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Indiana) voted in favor of raising the minimum wage. By a margin of 69% to 28%, according to the March Bloomberg Poll, Americans support an increase in the minimum wage. In fact, some Republicans support eliminating the minimum wage altogether, including Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tennessee) and billionaire Republicans the Koch Brothers, who have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of Republicans in the last five years. Raising the minimum wage will help raise the wages of all workers, not just those currently at $7.25, by raising all wages and lift millions out of poverty.

Profiles of Democratic Candidates for the 9th Congressional District

Four Democrats are seeking our party's nomination for Congress in the 9th District. The Corydon Republican printed answers to their candidate questionnaire this week. The winner will likely face two-term incumbent Todd Young, who is expected to win the Republican primary. The Harrison County Democratic Party does not endorse candidates in primary contests.

One thing to remember is that while Harrison County is still in the 9th District, the Republican controlled legislature redrew the 9th District in 2011 and it may not be the district you are used to seeing. It now includes all of Brown, Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Jackson, Johnson, Lawrence, Monroe, Orange, and Washington Counties. Also in the district is the vast majority of Crawford County, about 2/3 of Morgan County, and about half of Scott County. Below is a map of the current 9th District.

Indiana Democrats Push for Equal Pay for Women

Democrats across the country, and in particular the State of Indiana pushed for laws to guarantee equal pay for equal work for women. In the U.S. Senate, Republicans blocked even having a debate on a bill to make it easier for women to show disparity in pay. Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Indiana) voted to proceed, while Sen. Dan Coats (R-Indiana) voted against proceeding. Here in Indiana, Rep. Linda Lawson (D-Hammond) tried to get an amendment to simply set up a commission to study this issue.
