Profiles of Democratic Candidates for the 9th Congressional District

Four Democrats are seeking our party's nomination for Congress in the 9th District. The Corydon Republican printed answers to their candidate questionnaire this week. The winner will likely face two-term incumbent Todd Young, who is expected to win the Republican primary. The Harrison County Democratic Party does not endorse candidates in primary contests.

Here is a link to the article: Four Democrats running for the 9th District

Each of the candidates also has either a facebook page or website, which you can access here: Bill Bailey, James R. McClure, J.S. Miller, Bill Thomas

One thing to remember is that while Harrison County is still in the 9th District, the Republican controlled legislature redrew the 9th District in 2011 and it may not be the district you are used to seeing. It now includes all of Brown, Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Jackson, Johnson, Lawrence, Monroe, Orange, and Washington Counties. Also in the district is the vast majority of Crawford County, about 2/3 of Morgan County, and about half of Scott County. Below is a map of the current 9th District.

Where to vote on Election Day

We are less than two weeks before Election Primary Day on Tuesday, May 6. Polls will be open from 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Those in line before 6:00 P.M. will still be allowed to vote. You may want to note that election officials changed polling locations in Franklin, Heth, Jackson, Morgan, Taylor, and Webster Townships. Many of these changes were to polling locations were you may have voted for decades, and many of the new locations may not be as convenient for you to vote. Also, some precincts have been clustered together, which for the precincts at schools, may be traffic nightmares around the time that the buses are coming in and out. This may not be a big problem in the primary when turnout is lower, but with a general election in November it could become a problem. Just as an example- so many precincts were packed into the buildings around the Government Center (the Old Hospital), the police had to direct traffic in the November 2012 Election. We do not want to see voters discouraged from voting because they cannot find a place to park their car. Of course, if you want to avoid these potential problems, check out our post on early and absentee voting: Absentee and Early Voting There is still time to voting absentee and early, but the time is running out!

Here is the new list of precinct locations, along with a map of the precincts in Harrison County. Precincts that have moved are highlighted.

The Coverage Gap in Indiana

Unlike all of our neighboring states, Indiana declined to accept the expansion of Medicaid. According to the non-partisan Kaiser Family Foundation, 181,930 people will fall into a coverage gap thanks to Indiana declining to accept federal money for Medicaid expansion. These people in the gap are those that make too little qualify for subsidies in the exchange, but too much to qualify the existing Medicaid system. Gov. Pence is trying to get a waiver for an alternate plan, but it would not cover as many people versus simply accepting the federal funds. Let's make sure we elect people to the General Assembly which will take a close look at seeing these Hoosiers get covered. For those that have insurance now, why should you care? These people currently go the emergency room for care, which we all pay for through higher bills for health care.

Indiana Democrats Push for Equal Pay for Women

Democrats across the country, and in particular the State of Indiana pushed for laws to guarantee equal pay for equal work for women. In the U.S. Senate, Republicans blocked even having a debate on a bill to make it easier for women to show disparity in pay. Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Indiana) voted to proceed, while Sen. Dan Coats (R-Indiana) voted against proceeding. Here in Indiana, Rep. Linda Lawson (D-Hammond) tried to get an amendment to simply set up a commission to study this issue. However, Republicans in the State House blocked this amendment. Take a look at these two articles on the issue.

Several Democrats from Harrison County attended the dinner, held in New Albany at the Grand Theater. U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly and State Supt. of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz were also in attendance. Former Congressman Baron Hill summed up what everyone in the room, and throughout the district were thinking, "We need more Lee Hamiltons in Washington".
