Otto Schalk lied about where he was born. Yet the Corydon Republican doesn't investigate further other than a live wire comment, and they they print obviously false attacks on the President in response. Who are these people running this rag? The evidence is clear and beyond any dispute that Otto lied about where he was born. We cannot trust Otto for any job, let alone Prosecutor. A Note from Heidi Sellers: We Need Your Help This Weekend

Well friends, 7 days 1hour and 21 minutes til Election Day !!! I know we have all worked hard but it is get out the vote time!!! I am sorry I could not join you last Saturday at headquarters due to Floyd co vote centers opening. However, this Saturday is Harrison County day!! Jake, Senator Young and I would like to invite all candidates and as many volunteers as we can find to run 1 1/2 hour shifts on Saturday from headquarters from 9:30-5! Senator Young and I will provide chicken and sides for lunch from 11:30-1. See if you can round up help. Maybe Rachel will bring her truck and some people can call to get SD and LD out to vote and some of us can canvass.

Let me know you are coming and how many so we can plan food. We will see everyone at headquarters Friday night for trick or treat and we can finalize plans. Shifts can run 9:30-11,
11-12:30, 12:30-2, 2-3:30, and 3:30-5. We need help on Monday too.

Halloween Parade: Walk or Ride with Harrison County Democrats

The annual Halloween Parade will be this Saturday. The Harrison County Democratic Party will again have its Little Red Wagon as an entry. Our candidates will also be very active.

The parade starts at 6:00 PM from the fairgrounds. If you would like to walk or ride with us or our candidates, try to get there by 5:00-5:30 PM. Check our candidates facebook sites, as many of them have updates on what they are doing in the parade. They would love to have as many people as possible and might even have a shirt for you. The weather looks great, so there will likely be a big crowd and this is the last parade before Election Day.

Let 'em go Otto: Harrison County's Revolving Door for Criminals

Let 'em go Otto. Sounds catchy, doesn't it? Well, it would be funny if it wasn't true. Under Otto Schalk, the real winners are the criminals he lets go, when he is actually at the office. You will be hearing more about this as the election draws near.

In the mean time, take a look at this and share with your friends so we can get a Prosecutor that will do her job for the people, not themselves.

Education Forums at Lanesville and Palmyra this Week

The Lanesville Education Association (LEA) has a forum Wednesday, October 22 at 6:30 PM in the Lanesville High School Cafeteria. The North Harrison NHCTA will be having a forum Thursday, October 23 at 6:30 at Morgan Elementary. Rhonda Rhoads has been invited. Heidi Sellers will be there. The public is invited, so this is also to remind citizens concerned about public education to attend and see where the candidates stand. Rhonda's record has been among the worst for public education in the General Assembly, and given their policies, that is saying something. She needs to be held accountable for these votes. The local newspaper won't do it, so it is our job as citizens.

Rhonda has avoided these forums so far, so let's see if she shows up this time. Don't the taxpayers deserve as much from our State Representative?

When will Rhonda Rhoads debate Heidi Sellers? That is the question at hand. Heidi Sellers has invited Rhonda to numerous forums across District 70. She has skipped events in Sellersburg and Corydon to date. Rhonda said she was too busy and could not come. This is despite Rhonda pulling in more than $58 thousand for her part time job in the Legislature. You would think she could sit by her opponent, side by side, for voters to compare and here both of their positions on the issues.

Maybe she doesn't want to have to explain why she got a 0% rating from the AFL-CIO, but 82% from the Koch Brothers.

October Democratic Party Meeting- Wednesday, October 15

We have decided to change the regular meeting date to October 15 (Wednesday). Please note that this means that there will be no meeting on October 21. It will be held at the Harrison County Government Center at 7:00 PM. We are down to the wire towards Election Day, so try to bring friends and supporters to help us as we approach the November 4 Election. We will have volunteer opportunities for the last 20 days of this election season.

Republicans continue to dismantle public school system

The assault on Indiana's public schools began with Mitch Daniels and his man Tony Bennett, but Gov. Pence is determined to continue the assault. Only trouble is, Bennett was defeated for Superintendent of Education by Glenda Ritz, who got more votes than Pence himself, and this was before Bennett's several scandals became breaking news.

Even so, Pence remains determined in his assault on public schools and, for partisan purposes, seeks to undermine Ritz's commitment to Indiana's public schools by using political appointees to personally attack independently-elected Ritz and thus undermine the Department of Education's effectiveness.

Pence has also set up a Center for Education and Career Innovation, a costly shadow agency that overlaps the responsibilities of the Department of Education and four other state agencies. The CECI costs taxpayers over $3 million and is chaired by a non-educator who serves as the governor's special assistant at a salary of $120,000, more than the governor's $112,000 salary or the Superintendent of Education's $88,000 salary. The CECI also employs a staff of 16, six of whom earn more than $100,000 each.

Pence has further pursued his anti-public school agenda through the GOP-dominated state legislature. Its current budget gives schools their lowest funding for the last generation in a year not in recession. Rep. Rhonda Rhoads voted for this budget.

Then, from the already underfunded money allocated for public schools, the GOP took money to pay for a greatly-expanded voucher program for additional students already in private schools, costing Indiana taxpayers and the public schools $15.8 million. Rhonda Rhoads voted for vouchers originally and then for their expansion.

The GOP also continues in its enthusiasm for charter schools, whose students take with them money from the public schools. These charters are for-profit, corporate-operated schools whose performances, on average, are no better than, if as good as, those of public schools. One of Bennett's scandals was that he raised the grade of a charter school whose owner was a contributor to his campaign.

The Republicans continue to work against teacher unions, which provide the only voice for those who actually teach our kids. The Republican legislature has worked to lower standards for teacher licensing, compromising the education, training and professionalism of those who teach our children.

Rhonda Rhoads has been a consistent and loyal supporter of the GOP's assault on the public schools even to the point of using tax dollars for corporate and private school funding.

Rhonda Rhoads: Ineffective State Representative

State Rep. Rhonda Rhoads has not been effective this years as a member of the General Assembly. She authored three bills this session. None passed.

She co-authored 11 bills, resolutions, or constitutional amendments. Only one was signed into law by the Governor. She did manage to pass a constititional amendment to enshrine discrimination into our state constitution. It was amended to make it not as bad. But, the U.S. District Court, the 7th Circuit Court, and now the U.S. Supreme Court have rebuffed Rhonda on that one.

So Rhonda has passed only one law she co-authored and tried to deny rights to Hoosiers. Hey Rhonda- how about the JOBS? How about PUBLIC EDUCATION?

Good thing is that we have a candidate that is focused on jobs and public education: Heidi Sellers.

Otto Schalk's Record on Child Abuse Cases: It's that Bad

We have been able to see in great detail Otto Schalk's horrible record on burglary cases. Now, what about child abuse cases? The record is even worse. You can look up everything here on mycase.in.gov.

Take this case, No. 31D01-1008-FB-634. The person in that case was charged with Aggravated Battery, with injuries causing protracted loss or impairment, a B Felony, Neglect of a Dependent resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a B Felony, and Neglect of a Dependent where the dependent put in a situation endangering his life, another D Felony. If this were to have gone to trial, the person could have received up to 46 years in prison.

That may be a bit technical, so here is what the Indiana State Police said at the time:

A three month old child was taken to the Harrison County Hospital and then transferred to the Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY with what preliminarily appeared to be non-accidental head trauma.

 This was serious head trauma to a three month old baby. Let's repeat: serious head trauma. A person that engages in acts that cause a defenseless three month old baby serious head trauma deserves severe punishment.

Otto Schalk disagreed with severe punishment for a person engaged in a horrible case of child abuse. His office signed a plea agreement dismissing the two most serious charges, with a plea to the least serious charge. What did he get? Time served- 112 days. That for serious child abuse. In fact, Otto Schalk also agreed to allowing him to have contact with children before the case was even over. That is a serious lack of judgment.

If giving a sweetheart deal to someone engaged in serious child abuse wasn't bad enough, the same person was arrested on A Felony meth charges a few months later. And in another classic Otto Schalk move, the same person got a plea deal where he served only about 10% of the maximum sentence he could have gotten. That is not right. It is either incompetence or laziness. Because, remember, plea agreements are up to the Prosecutor alone. A Judge may only accept or reject them.

We need a Prosecutor that will not treat serious child abuse cases with such disregard. We need a Prosecutor that will not create a revolving door system for criminals. We need a new Prosecutor on November 4.

Rest in Peace Former Democratic Chairman Don Hamblen, 1928-2014

Our thoughts and prayers with Don's family. Don was the Democratic County Chairman in the 1980s. Under Don's leadership, Democrats swept the countywide ticket in 1986. He will be missed. We have attached the obituary from the local newspaper.

Donald L. Hamblen, 86, Lanesville, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at Rolling Hills Health Center in New Albany.

Born Aug. 30, 1928, in Brown County, he was the son of the late James W. and Mary Etta Morrison Hamblen.

He was retired from sales and service at Horning Inc. in Indianapolis, a past president of the Lanesville Town Council, a former Harrison County Democratic Party chairman, a former 4-H Club leader of the Lanesville Hillbillies, a former bar keep at K&H in Lanesville and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church near Lanesville.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Clara L. Baker; six brothers, Jesse, Plessie, John, Raymond, Pleasant and James; and five sisters, Tressa, Flora, Wilma, Alva and Wanda.

Survivors include three sons, D. Kent Hamblen of Birmingham, Ala., Matthew S. Hamblen of Murray, Ky., and Stuart W. Hamblen of Angola; two daughters, Elaine Y. Hamblen of Lanesville and Kaye M. Walraven of Apple Valley, Calif.; a sister, Wanda Wilson of Columbus; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Celebration of Life: Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church near Edwardsville.

Memorial service: Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Lanesville with burial in St. John’s Cemetery.

Officiant: Pastor Christopher Truelsen.

Pallbearers: Jacob Hamblen, Brian Balsley, Jake Walraven, Jeff and Brad Hanni and Don Whitely.

Arrangements: Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon.

Celebration of life service: Sunday, Oct. 5, at 5 p.m. in the school auditorium.

The family suggests memorial gifts to the Harrison County Community Foundation to be designated for a New Middletown Memorial Park Fund.

Caucus to Replace Gordon Pendleton on Tuesday

While we know that no one can ever replace Gordon, we do have to fill his seat on the Council and spot on the ballot. Here is the information on how we will do that this week.

 

A note from the Chairman. Please share with anyone you know considering filling Gordon's seat for the remainder of 2014. And/or running for District 3 County Council in Gordon's stead. Two separate caucuses will be held, one after the other, to fill the separate vacancies on October 7th. The caucus will include precinct chairs located in District 3, which is Harrison Township, with the exceptions of Northwest Harrison and South Harrison precincts. It will be held at Democratic headquarters on Capitol Avenue at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, October 7.

Here's the required paperwork.

A letter of intent to fill the vacancy, CEB 5 and CAN 31, mailed to Harrison County Democrats PO Box 8, Corydon, IN. 47112 by this Friday. The CAN 31 also must be turned into the County Clerk no later than this Friday, 72 hours before the caucus. It is critical that anyone interested file the necessary documents to be considered.

UPDATE: Rhonda Rhoads has said that she does not have time to attend this forum, or the other three forums across District 70 proposed by Heidi Sellers. Note that Rhonda is retired, and as a part-time legislator, her duties were over in mid-March. Draw your own conclusions there.
